Doha: From Pearls of the Sea to Pearls of Architecture

Why Doha Is a Good Idea for a Short Getaway

Doha is not merely the capital of Qatar; it is a city of contrasts, where ultra-modern skyscrapers coexist with alleyways in which spices are traded according to centuries-old traditions. It is a city not overwhelmed by tourist flows, particularly in the low season, when no large-scale events are taking place.

For Ukrainians currently based in Europe, Doha can be an unexpected discovery: visa-free entry, direct flights from many cities, and the opportunity to encounter a very different world within the span of a weekend. It is a city that does not require weeks to explore — it can be experienced in two or three days, yet it lingers in memory.

Visa Information: Simpler Than It Seems

Good news for Ukrainian travelers: since 2017, Qatar has waived visa requirements for citizens of Ukraine.

What you need to know about visa-free regime:

Duration of stay: Ukrainian citizens may remain in Qatar for up to 90 days within a 180-day period — more than sufficient for a short trip.

Entry requirements are traditional, as for most countries:

  • Passport valid for at least six months after the date of entry
  • Confirmation of return or onward flight
  • Confirmation of accommodation booking

Importantly: Although medical insurance is not mandatory, it is recommended to cover possible emergencies during your trip.

Upon arrival at Hamad International Airport, you simply proceed through passport control — the visa is issued free of charge directly in your passport. The process usually takes no more than 15–20 minutes, depending on queues.

How to get there: routes from Europe

Qatar Airways, the country's national carrier, offers passenger flights to 49 European airports, making Doha extremely accessible from most European cities. Doha is also a hub for many other airlines.

Direct flights from major hubs:

From big cities: London, Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Munich, Rome and Zurich have regular direct flights to Doha. The flight time is between 6 and 7 hours.

Weekend in Doha: must-see and must-do

Saturday: Cultural Immersion

Morning: Museum of Islamic Art (MIA)

Start your day at the Museum of Islamic Art, one of the world’s finest museums of Islamic art. The museum’s building, designed by J.M. Pei, is an architectural masterpiece in itself. The collection spans 1,400 years of history from three continents, from metalwork to ceramics, jewelry and textiles.

Free admission, and the museum is open from Saturday to Thursday from 9:00 to 19:00, on Friday from 13:30 to 19:00.

Day: Souq Waqif – the heart of old Doha

Souq Waqif is a traditional market with food stalls and a bird market with a variety of birds, turtles and rabbits. It is a place where you can lose hours of time wandering through the narrow alleys, admiring carpets, spices, perfumes and souvenirs.

Evening: Waterfront and sunset

Stroll along the 7-kilometer promenade, the so-called “Cornish” – the place where Doha shows itself in the best light. On one side – the Persian Gulf, on the other – the futuristic skyline of the city. During sunset, this place acquires a special magic.

Sunday: Modernity and Adventure

Morning: Katara Cultural Village

Katara is a cultural village with occasional small exhibitions and shows. It is home to the Golden Mosque, an amphitheater and many galleries. Katara is also known for its air-conditioned street - especially nice in the hot months.

The Pearl is an artificial island with a Mediterranean feel. The Qanat Quartier is reminiscent of Venice with its canals and pastel-colored houses. It is home to boutiques, restaurants, and a marina with luxury yachts.

Afternoon: Desert Safari

Another unique experience this city has to offer is a trip to the desert. A desert safari includes quad biking, camel riding and dune bashing. Most tours last 4-5 hours and cost between $50 and $100 per person. If you have time, choose the evening sunset tour - the views are incredible.

Additional ideas for active people:

Education City and Torba Market: On weekends, the Torba Food Market offers coffee, food, and fresh produce from local businesses, making it a popular spot for Qataris to immerse themselves in local life.

  2. Top it up in increments of 5 riyals

The metro has three lines (Red, Green, and Gold) that connect the airport, West Bay, Education City, and other key areas.

Weekend budget: how much money do you need?

Let's consider three scenarios for two days in Doha (without airfare):

Economy mode: $120-150 per day

  • Accommodation: budget hotel or hostel ($50-70/night)
  • Food: street food and local cafes ($20-30/day)
  • Transportation: metro and walking ($5/day)
  • Entertainment: free museums, walks ($0-20/day)

Average comfort: $200-300 per day

  • Accommodation: 4-star hotel ($80-120/night)
  • Food: a mix of local eateries and good restaurants ($50-70/day)
  • Transportation: metro + sometimes Uber ($15-20/day)
  • Entertainment: desert safari, paid museums ($50-100/day)

Suite: $500+ per day

  • Accommodation: 5-star hotel ($250-400/night)
  • Food: premium restaurants ($150-200/day)
  • Transportation: private driver or premium car rental ($80-100/day)
  • Entertainment: private tours, SPA, beach clubs ($150-200/day)

Practical tips

Climate and clothing

  • In winter (November-March): Temperatures of 15-24°C are ideal for walking. Bring a light sweater for the evenings.
  • In summer (June-August): Extreme heat 35-45°C. Although hotels are cheaper, walking during the day is almost impossible.

Dress code

Qatar is a Muslim country, but Doha is cosmopolitan. In public places, it is recommended to cover shoulders and knees. On the beaches and in hotels, there is more freedom.

Currency

The official currency is the Qatari riyal (QAR), pegged to the dollar (1 USD ≈ 3.64 QAR). Credit cards are accepted everywhere, but bring some cash for the street markets.

Alcohol

Alcohol is only sold in licensed hotels and restaurants and is expensive ($15-20 for a cocktail). Most tourists focus on local soft drinks like Karak tea and fresh juices.

Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, cafes and shopping malls. The metro also has free internet.

Why is it worth going now?

Doha is undergoing a period of cultural expansion. Following the successful hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the city continues to develop, opening new districts, museums, and cultural venues. Infrastructure is steadily improving.

For Ukrainians, this offers a particularly interesting opportunity: to encounter the Arab world in one of its most contemporary expressions, experience renowned Qatari hospitality, and gain memorable impressions at relatively accessible costs.
