Mission

Qahwa.Media’s mission is to create a clear, in-depth and context-rich media space that connects Ukraine and the Middle East through stories, ideas, business, culture and human experience.

We aim to:

  • help readers see a broader picture of the world, free of oversimplification, propaganda and manipulation;
  • introduce Ukraine to international audiences as a country of voices, opportunities and engagement;
  • broaden the Ukrainian media’s view of the Middle East, especially of the countries and topics that are underrepresented in Ukraine’s information space.

Our values

We are guided by the following principles:

  • Context over noise and fragmentationWe explain processes rather than simply record events.
  • Respect for cultures and perspectivesWithout exoticising, belittling or generalising.
  • Honesty and responsibilityIn our wording, facts and conclusions.
  • Trust in the reader’s intelligenceWe do not artificially simplify what is complex.
  • Quality journalism and dialogueAs the foundation for mutual understanding between societies.
  • Slow, thoughtful readingAs an alternative to information overload.

Editorial independence

Qahwa.Media is an independent media outlet. Only the editorial team decides what we cover and how. Advertisers, partners and donors have no influence on editorial decisions, and no financial or partnership arrangement changes that.

How we label commercial content is explained in the section “Advertising and partnerships”.

Journalistic standards

Qahwa.Media journalists and contributors follow the Code of Ethics of Ukrainian Journalists and the Global Charter of Ethics for Journalists of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ). In our daily work, this means:

  • accuracy, reliability and a balance of views;
  • a clear separation of facts from commentary, and of news from analysis and opinion pieces;
  • the principle of “do no harm”, especially when covering sensitive topics and vulnerable groups;
  • fact-checking before publication.

We do not publish material containing hate speech, discrimination or incitement to violence.

Conflicts of interest. If an author has personal, financial or professional ties to the people or subject of a story, they disclose this to the editors. We then either assign the story to another author or state the connection openly in the text.

Sources and fact-checking

  • All facts must be based on verified sources.
  • We use information from social media only after additional verification.
  • We name the original sources of information and data and, wherever possible, link to them.
  • We use anonymous sources only in exceptional cases: when the information cannot be obtained otherwise and revealing a person’s identity could put them at risk. The identity of such a source is known to the editors.
  • We use third-party texts, photos and videos only in line with the rights holders’ requirements.

Covering Russia’s war against Ukraine

We report on Russia’s war against Ukraine with people’s safety and our responsibility to our audience in mind.

  • We do not use Russian state-owned or Russian-controlled media as sources of information.
  • We comply with the restrictions in force in Ukraine under martial law and do not publish information that could harm the country’s defence or people’s safety.
  • We use precise terminology: Russian aggression, full-scale invasion, temporarily occupied territories — not a “conflict” or a “crisis”.

Covering conflicts in the Middle East

Qahwa.Media is not a political publication: we write primarily about business, culture, society and people. But the Middle East is a region of ongoing armed conflicts and humanitarian crises, and when our stories touch on these issues, we cover them in a measured way, with respect for everyone they affect, and apply the same standards as to any other war.

  • In assessing events, we rely on international law: the UN Charter, international humanitarian law and international human rights law, as well as resolutions and decisions of UN bodies.
  • On borders and the status of territories, we follow the position of the United Nations.
  • Civilians are at the centre of our attention. We avoid hate speech, generalisations and assigning collective responsibility to entire peoples or religious groups.

Columns and opinion pieces

Columns with subjective assessments, personal interpretations and analytical conclusions may appear in our Opinions and Guide sections. We label such pieces as opinion, so that readers can tell the author’s view from the editorial position.

At the same time:

  • columns do not necessarily reflect the position of the Qahwa.Media editorial team;
  • authors must rely on verified facts;
  • the editors reserve the right to check facts and edit the text.

Use of artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence is an important part of how our newsroom works. We use it to search for and process information, prepare drafts, translate and create visual materials.

Human in the loop

We understand the risks involved: errors and fabricated facts, bias, copyright infringement. That is why the “human in the loop” approach is fundamental to us: every text we create is checked and edited by a person before publication, and the editorial team is responsible for everything published on Qahwa.Media — regardless of the tools used.

Our rules:

  • We check facts, figures and quotes in AI-assisted content against original sources.
  • We do not invent quotes or create photorealistic images of real people or events.
  • AI-generated images and videos are always labelled.
  • Translations made with the help of AI are labelled. If a translation has been reviewed by an editor or translator, it is marked “reviewed by a human”.
  • We do not upload confidential information or data that could identify our sources to AI services.
  • We do not publish material that infringes copyright.

We follow the Recommendations on the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Media developed by Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Transformation.

Corrections and the right of reply

If an error is found in a story, we correct it promptly. If the correction is significant, we note its date and nature at the end of the text.

If you have spotted an inaccuracy, have a complaint about a story or wish to exercise your right of reply, please write to the editors. We review every message and respond to it.

When engaging audiences and advertising partners from other countries, we also take into account those countries’ advertising requirements and international ethical standards in media and advertising.
